The holidays are a great time to bond with kids and enjoy the exciting time of year. Whether you’re celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa, there are countless fun holiday activities to enjoy with your preschooler. Some of these fun things will help kids be active and entertained, all while making memories for a lifetime.
At a curriculum-based preschool like Parkland Children’s Academy, our staff at the voluntary prekindergarten program engages in age-appropriate lessons that teach students valuable lessons that prepare them for kindergarten.
Fun Activities For Your Preschooler
The holiday season is a special time of year for many families. We think about the traditions our family enjoys, and maybe we start some of our own. Building new memories with your own children is priceless. However, sometimes it can be hard to come up with new and fresh ideas for activities to do with your children.
Christmas Holiday Activities
Here we will explore some of our favorite holiday activities to enjoy with your young children.
Homemade Christmas Cards
Everyone loves a good Christmas card. Get the holiday season started by creating personalized homemade cards for your family. Not only will this be something your family will cherish, but it also allows children to embrace their creative selves. Creative play is a powerful way to foster self-confidence in preschool-aged kids.
Get Your Fizz On
Let’s combine a science experiment with a traditional Christmas favorite, the candy cane. You’ll need a bottle of vinegar, food coloring, a cookie sheet, a dropper, and of course, a candy cane. Spread baking soda on the cookie sheet, then place candy canes on top. Next, pour vinegar into a cup and mix with any food coloring you want (maybe green and red).
Have your preschooler use a dropper to drop the vinegar mix on top of the baking soda, which is a great fine motor skills activity too. They’ll enjoy seeing the vinegar and baking soda react. Let it sit for about an hour, and they will see that the candy cane has mostly dissolved. So cool!
Hanukkah Preschool Activities
Hanukkah is an eight-day festival of lights celebration. What would be more fun than enjoying a Hanukkah activity with your preschooler every day of the wintertime holiday? It’s time to have some fun!
Dreidel Spin Art
This popular spinning top toy is a fun activity for adults and kids to enjoy together. Simply dip the dreidel you’re using in paint and spin them on a poster board. The results are a fun graffiti-like design that you created together.
Hanukkah-Themed Sensory Bin
For some ideas, choose eight objects or symbols to include in your bin, like candles, latkes, donuts, coins, or dreidels. Add sand and glitter to make finding the items more fun. Play I Spy with the items in the bin. Practice their counting skills as they search through the bin to find the symbols you want them to discover.
Kwanzaa Activities for Preschoolers
Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration that starts the day after Christmas. It celebrates African traditions and beliefs.
Customize a Unity Cup
This is a great holiday activity for your family to enjoy together. Create a custom family unity cup with different seeds or thread. You will need a hot glue gun to attach your decorations to the chosen cup.
Make Beaded Necklaces For Kwanzaa
For this activity, you’ll need fishing line. Measure out the length and make a double knot at one end. Next, string beads onto the line. When finished, tie the two ends together and wear them throughout the entire celebration. These would make great holiday gifts too!
